ASSIGNMENT 1 (Due Jan 31)

The Visual Story (01/24/07)
ASSIGNMENT 1 (Due Jan 31)

You are developing a brand. This brand is based on you and your ‘story’.
Research will be INTEGRAL to creating this work.
Presentations will be made to the class in PowerPoint.
Binders (8.5”x11”) of all work will be required to document and communicate developing work.

PART ONE
Create a visual story as a PowerPoint presentation showing examples of two brands that make effective use of color. Be prepared to explain how color helps define each brand’s ‘story’.

Consider brands that have personal appeal to you. Do not use brands that we are all too familiar with (example: Apple, Starbucks, Calvin Klein, McDonalds, etc). These choices will relate to Part Two of the assignment.

PART TWO
Building on Part One of the assignment, design a color palette that is based on you and your story.

Present your color palette in the form of a flag design (fit to 8.5 x11”).
Present examples that clarify your definition of a ‘flag’.
Present 3 design variations.

Starting points for your presentation:
What personal features of your ‘story’ relate to the brands you presented?
How does your flag make effective use of the color palette?

PRESENTATION
Present all work in PowerPoint presentation.
Post presentation on class blog – due DAY OF CLASS.
Printout presentation and put in 8.5” x 11” binder.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is for students who are interested in ‘creative direction’ (or directing creative content) for publication. All forms of design, including logos, ad campaigns, editorial spreads, packaging, products and retail environment convey some part of a larger ‘story’. During the course of the semester, we will discuss the importance of ‘story’ in varied design formats. Students will participate in weekly assignments and group critiques. An emphasis will be placed on using personal interests and point of view to draw a thread from one assignment to the next.

The first part of the semester will be spent developing effective work based on student’s personal interests. The second part will focus that work toward the real-life scenario of working with a client. Students will also experience professional design studio / group work.

Techniques for research, editing, revising, design continuity, and presentation will all be covered, with focus on each student’s personal improvement. Students are required to utilize research and present in a professional manner for each critique. As the semester continues, individual efforts will be directed toward a final group project of creating one finished publication.
